Madeira’s extensive range of stabilisers and toppings will help you to achieve optimum results across all embroidery styles and techniques. But how do you know which backing to use on your next project when there are so many to choose from?
The most important factor when choosing a stabiliser is the type of fabric being embroidered, followed by the style and stitch count of the embroidery. The stability or stretch of the fabric will determine the amount of additional stability required, remember to use a maximum of three layers or switch to a heavier backing. For more specialised work, fusible, self-adhesive peel away backings, heat and water soluble toppings and heat seal film complete the range.

Backings & Toppings
Cut-away - Backing
Cut-away backings are soft, non-woven stabilisers ideal for unstable fabrics such as knits, sweaters, fleece, lightly woven or stretchy fabrics. The type of fabric and the design’s size and density will determine the weight of cut away needed. Available in various roll sizes and also in pre-cut squares.
Tear away - Backing
Tear-away backings are non-woven stabilisers ideal for all stable fabrics, caps, denim, twill or canvas. The larger and denser the design, the heavier the weight of embroidery stabiliser needed. Excess stabiliser is torn away from the design, leaving a clean look on the reverse of the garment. We offer a wide range in various weights, on rolls and pre-cut squares.
Badge Making
Badges and patches are a popular way of marketing and promoting all kinds of companies, generating an instantly recognisable insignia and recent fashion trends have seen an increase in badges on apparel.
